"The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off." - Gloria Steinem
Ain't that the truth? Happy belated 87th birthday to Gloria Steinem, one of the women who shaped my teenage brain about what it means to be female. Wait, she can't really be 87, can she? Yikes!
Fair and free elections are at risk as Republican politicians in state after state write and move voter suppression bills forward. The most egregious at this writing is Georgia. Republicans in the state are furious that two Democratic candidates won a fair election to give Democrats control of the Senate. Their answer? Make it impossible for people, particularly people of color to vote.
The fact that Democrats control the House, Senate and Presidency but could still be thwarted in making the country a better place for every citizen is reprehensible. The filibuster must be eliminated. Otherwise, as Heather Cox Richardson explains, "...the extraordinary state laws designed to guarantee that Democrats can never win another election will stay in effect, and America as a whole will look much like the Jim Crow South, with democracy replaced by a one-party state."
Now for something completely different. A few weeks ago this little beauty started showing up on my deck. Because of her tortoiseshell coloring, she is most likely female. And because of her gender, she is most likely pregnant or would have been. So, along with a local rescue, Fix Erie, we came up with a plan.
Alison Almeda - Fix Erie's Operations & Outreach officer offered to pay the vet bills for the spay and other vet care, and try to find her a home if I could catch her. I set out to trap the little girl. And, here she is.
I am pretty sure she has never been around people. Let's just say if looks could kill I'd be dead several times over. She is now locked in a bedroom with food, water, litter box and warm bed. I am going to try to get her to warm up to me. I want her to have a safe, indoor home to live her best life.
That's my mission in the next few days. I'll keep you posted.
